Gastronomy -- A Modern American Bistro, Southfield
When you can't stand to see one more comfort-grub menu, head to Gastronomy in Southfield, where executive chef Adam Hightower successfully bridges the chasm between approachable American bistro cuisine and contemporary fine dining. Hightower's beautiful presentations on oversized serving pieces are calculated to wow the eye. But what you'll remember most are the flavor combinations of dishes like the seared scallop trio, each piece paired with a different sauce or purée to be eaten in order, mildest to boldest. Try the steak-and-eggs starter, which won't look like what you expect -- but that's the idea. The menu changes seasonally; entrées at the moment range from Duck Both Ways to vegetarian Roasted Manicotti to pan-seared Barramundi, a mild ocean fish. Gastronomy's location on the ground floor of the Baker Tilly office tower isn't glamorous, and its sedate décor isn't exciting. Still, if your priority is interesting, modern food, this is the place.
