Tom's Oyster Bar

The dining room professes old-school character with tiny, white hexagonal floor tiles, white milk-glass pendant lights and dark, wood-paneled walls. But the two-story ceiling, covered in brushed-pewter tiles, looks fresh and contemporary. The front walls are really garage-style glass doors that roll up in summer to connect the dining room to the sidewalk patio. Overhanging the bar, there's a small, attractive loft dining area with a flat-panel television for guests who want to catch a game. The menu, too, mixes old-Tom's favorites with new-Tom's sophistication. Traditional favorites include the raw bar, which has fresh oysters every day. The classic Tom's soups are here, along with the oysters Rockefeller and the pan-sauteed perch. And every day brings an updated list of fresh-catch fish that can be ordered grilled, broiled, blackened or with the chef's signature salmoriglio sauce. --Sylvia Rector
