I had to see this place for myself while in Detroit on business, and I'll be damned, it's the real deal. Not much to look at, and not the friendliest people you'll ever meet, but that adds to the atmosphere because that's what you'd get at a real New York deli. The corned beef and the rye bread are both out of this world -- as good as, and in some cases better than, what you'd get in NY (and I don't mean the tourist traps; I'm talking in Queens or Westchester). Enjoyed my dinner sandwich so much I went back and got one for lunch before flying home. I don't go home to NY too much, and there's nothing like this in DC. A real highlight of the Detroit area!

Best Coleslaw Anywhere

While the pastrami, corned beef, and rye bread are awesome here, what simply cannot be beat anywhere in my book is the Star Deli coleslaw. Crunchy, sweet ,with a bit of a bite -- horseradish? -- that you cannot get enough of. Great on the sandwich and on the side, I will stop by just to take home a couple pounds of Star Deli cole slaw whenever I am in the area! Please don't ever change your recipe, guys!

I've lived San Diego for over 25 years now, and boy do I tell you. I really miss Star Deli! That hole-in-the-wall has the best deli sandwiches I've eaten - anywhere! The Corned Beef sandwiches, and even selections like Turkey and Tuna Salad, are absolutely top-rate! I also love their double-baked rye bread. Every time I'm back in Detroit visiting family, I stop in their for a terrific sandwich. Sid the owner and his workers are great - keep up the good work! You should open up a branch in San Diego!
