First Taste: Beans and Cornbread

Beans and Cornbread in Southfield is a soul food restaurant that transcends the standard category of soul food by incorporating all sorts of different flavors into the classic repertoire. “Soul food is more of a state of mind than just a list of certain ingredients,” says Owner Patrick Coleman, whose mission was to create a non-traditional soul food restaurant. It must have worked since Beans and Cornbread received the “Best Soul Food” award from The Detroit Free Press and Hour Detroit Magazine in 2007. The menu is filled with classics like fried catfish, collard greens and macaroni and cheese. One will also see some signature twists on classics, like the addition of portabella mushrooms and a red pepper sauce to the salmon croquettes.  Fresh fish like mahi-mahi hits the weekend specials list.
