Located on Mexicantown’s main drag, Vernor Highway, Armando’s Mexican Restaurant is one of Detroit’s the oldest and most well-known Mexican restaurants.
Started by Armando Galan over 45 years ago, Armando’s is recognized for its consistent service and quality Mexican, Tex-Mex and Cuban dishes. For the last 22 years, the restaurant has been owned by the Hernandez family and run by Cecilia (Hernandez) Benedict.
Benedict recalls when she first started working at Armando’s over 18 years ago seeing customers come in with their small children, She now sees those children all grown up coming in with dates.
Bread and desserts, such as tres leches cake, arroz con leche and flan are supplied from the Mexicantown Bakery located next door and owned by Benedict’s brother, Omar Hernandez.
The Detroit Tigers receive catered food from Armando’s when at home and even celebrated their 1984 World Series title at the restaurant.
Recently, we stopped into Armando’s to try the food and see why the restaurant has been such a popular main stay.
Definitely try the Baja tacos. When Benedict was on a trip to Baja a few years ago, she could not stop eating the seafood tacos so, she put them on the menu. Armando’s version is made with scallops, shrimp, bacon and cheese and served with a lemon garnish.
