Cafe Muse
4.5
Grilled three-cheese sandwich at Cafe Muse in Royal Oak. Sliced tomatoes, fresh basil and a little honey give it added flavor and complexity.

Sometimes the best things really do come in small packages. Diamonds. iPods. That little black dress. But none of those things comes with a vanilla bean waffle, lightly crisped outside, topped with fresh blueberries and sliced strawberries, a glacier of whipped cream and drizzles of maple syrup. For that, you'll have to seek out a small place a short vibration away from the railroad tracks that slice through downtown Royal Oak. Just south of where the tracks cross Washington, you'll find Cafe Muse. It could easily be overlooked, but that would be a shame. Chef and co-owner Greg Reyner and his partner David Smith try hard to offer something special. Their muse? Take familiar foods and make them better -- but not pretentiously so. They recently moved to a more spacious venue just a block south of the original location but have retained the intimate, relaxing atmosphere of the smaller site. Inside, the tidy tables are set with squat, square glass vases filled with pebbles supporting a single white Fuji mum. Classic! They were also named "best grilled cheese sandwich in America" by Esquire Magazine and have been featured on The Oprah Winfrey Show. Don't wait another minute to taste for yourself.
