And the winner is…
Noble Fish
45 E. Fourteen Mile
Clawson, MI 48174Noble Fish is a small Japanese grocery store in a modest retail center. But it’s the tiny store-back restaurant, Noble Fish Sushi Bar, that connected with Metromix readers. They narrowly voted it ahead of the 2011 winner, Ronin. All traditional sushi combinations are available, as well as a few rolls unique to Noble Fish. Try the appetizer called Dynamite, a small, baked casserole of mixed seafood and vegetables. Noble Fish is widely recognized for having some of the freshest and most affordable sushi in metro Detroit.

Ronin
325 W. Fourth
Royal Oak, MI 48067Neighborhood: Downtown Royal Oak
Located next to the Royal Oak Music Theatre in the popular 'burb, Ronin is always buzzing with action. The upstairs promotions in the Study are great -- if and when you can get in -- the lounge area is a social scene in itself and the chefs are always working magic
Shiro Restaurant
43180 W. Nine Mile
Novi, MI 48375Turning a grand white-columned mansion from the 1930s into a Japanese fusion and sushi restaurant might not sound like a recipe for success. But the contrast in cultures and styles only adds to the flavor at different, distinctive Shiro. Bare wood floors, uncluttered walls and white fabric-draped chairs on the first and second floors unify the decor among the old home's many rooms. In the basement are traditional Japanese tatami rooms with seating on the floor. The restaurant draws a large, mostly American clientele at dinner -- it's a popular date place -- and a business crowd at lunch, when the menu includes nicely filled bento boxes. The menu's variety will satisfy even the most devout meat-and-potatoes diner, with more than a dozen Western and fusion entrees featuring poultry, seafood, lamb and beef. Sushi pizza -- a crisp sushi-rice cake topped with baked spicy tuna and mozzarella cheese and broiled until bubbly -- and Dynamite, a small casserole of spicy tuna, cream cheese and crabmeat that's set on fire at your table are popular here. Shin's eclectic background music is terrific, the wine list may surprise you, and there's an inviting cocktail bar in the back.
Chen Chow Brasserie
260 N. Old Woodward
Birmingham, MI 48009Neighborhood: Downtown Birmingham
If Hollywood built a restaurant designed to evoke a sexy, modern, monied Chinatown, it would probably look a lot like Chen Chow Brasserie, a downtown Birmingham see-and-be-seen spot. Yes, there's food, but what you'll remember most is the dramatic style and ambiance. Set on Old Woodward, where the short-lived Pampas Brazilian Grille was located, Chen Chow is equal parts bar and restaurant, each with its own look and personality. The multilevel dining room features many dramatic, Asian-inspired decorative elements, and when Chen Chow's tables are filled and the bar is jammed, the place is charged with energy.
