Best of Metromix Detroit: PIZZA

(Smile and) Say "cheese" Detroit. Whether it's round or square, sauce-y, meatie or veggie, there are some amazing restaurants that deliver when it comes to a steaming good pizza pie. Motor City residents and their crusty-worthy meals are longtime BFFs: The Little Caesars empire, Domino's, Cottage Inn, Hungry Howie's and more chains are all based out of the magical mitten state. For our list of five nominees, we tossed out all those delivery/pick up based menus and focused on sit-down specialty establishments. So many choices for this category it was maddening. However which way you slice it, down below are five top(pings) spots. Disagree? Cast your vote first then fire up the comments (and pick up a large and bring it through the office for a friendly meal/debate).

And the winner is…

Buddy's Rendezvous Pizzeria

Buddy's Rendezvous Pizzeria

17125 Conant
Detroit, MI 48212
Opening in 1936 as a "blind pig" designed to skirt the laws of prohibition, the original Buddy's has a devoted following who claim it's the best of the bunch. But there are a slew of locations throughout the metro area and they all rock that patented thick crust, crisp edges of melted cheese and rows of rich dark tomato sauce spooned in rows across the top of this classic cheese pizza. Oh my

Como's Restaurant

Como's Restaurant

22812 Woodward
Ferndale, MI 48220
This Ferndale institution is the hottest stop on the (Woodward) block when it's summertime in the D and the patio is a bumping, the beer is flowing and the restaurant's signature pizza is dropped off for you and your friends. Nearly a half century old, the authentic Italian kitchen is open late(!) and the scene is as satisfying as its famous pie
Pizza Papalis Taverna

Pizza Papalis Taverna

553 Monroe
Detroit, MI 48226
Neighborhood: Greektown
To fans of Chicago-style deep-dish pies, there's no place in metro Detroit like Pizza Papalis. In this hefty slice, "toppings" of green pepper, onion and pepperoni line the bottom of the crust, a formidable layer of cheese comes next and tomato sauce crowns the top. The Greektown spot is incredible, but for those fixing for the goods there are multiple stops to get your fill
Green Lantern Lounge

Green Lantern Lounge

28960 John R.
Madison Heights, MI 48071
Step up fans. This award-winning Madison Heights pizzeria has a devoted following, no doubt. For those who haven't visited; Shame on you. The rich, delicious mozzarella blend fills your mouth with flavor, but there's something about that pepperoni people rave about most. The thick, spicy slices curl up into tiny grease cups -- (so good with beer!) -- and the edges are crispy treats. Amore!
Supino Pizzeria

Supino Pizzeria

2457 Russell
Detroit, MI 48207
In 2009 Metromix media partner the Detroit Free Press ran a totally tasty feature asking readers to show us the way when it comes to pizza pie, and they responded by voting Supino's No. 1. Founder Dave Mancini, who worked tirelessly to create cutting-edge New York style hybrid pizzas with fresh Italian influences and ingredients, has started a movement. At the Eastern Market spot, there are red pies (with sauce) and white pies (without sauce) and unique combinations like the “Smoky”, speck (smoked prosciutto), roasted garlic, mozzarella, smoked gouda and ricotta. If Pizza Papalis is nominated, why not add Domino's as well.
