And the winner is…

Miller's Bar

Miller's Bar

23700 Michigan Ave.
Dearborn, MI 48124
Good burgers make for good debates, and this year Miller's knocked the reigning champs (Redcoat Tavern) out of the top burger spot. When people argue about who makes the best hamburger in metro Detroit, someone will always mention this down-home Dearborn bar, where there are no written bills and no plates. The thick, no-frills burgers arrive on waxed paper; pickles are on a tray at the table. You can't claim to know hamburgers in metro Detroit if you haven't been to Miller's.

Nominees

Krazy Jim's Blimpy Burger

Krazy Jim's Blimpy Burger

551 S. Division
Ann Arbor, MI 48104
Neighborhood: Downtown Ann Arbor
One of Ann Arbor's greasiest gems, Blimpy Burger has been heralded on the Food Network and the pages of GQ. Small, French-style patties are the heart and soul, with soul-pulling onion rings and fried vegetables as must-haves. As always, you must order your food to the line cook in the correct order, lest you receive a brutal tongue lashing. That's the joint's charm: tough love for great burgers.
Red Coat Tavern

Red Coat Tavern

31542 Woodward
Royal Oak, MI 48073
Burger nirvana awaits you at the Red Coat. You can’t lose with the Original Red Coat Special — a memorably juicy ground beef patty with shredded iceberg lettuce, sliced tomato, onion, special sauce and maybe some sharp American cheese on a sesame bun.
Townhouse

Townhouse

180 Pierce
Birmingham, MI 48009
Neighborhood: Downtown Birmingham
The dish everyone's heard about is the 10-ounce burger, made with 28-day-aged prime beef, ground daily, served on a custom brioche bun with caramelized onions, aged white cheddar and superb fries, for $19.
JJ Fatts

JJ Fatts

2626 Coolidge
Berkley, MI 48072
Generously topped burgers -- made from beef ground fresh in-house every day -- star on the menu at the new JJ Fatts. Do let the Burger Meal Deal catch your eye. It's a half-pound burger on a sesame-seed bun with cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickle, onion and your choice of sauces, plus a generous order of fries and a 22-ounce fountain drink for $4.99 plus tax.

Last year's winner

Red Coat Tavern

Red Coat Tavern

31542 Woodward
Royal Oak, MI 48073
Who doesn’t love debating about good burgers? It was a close race between Red Coat and Miller’s, but voters said nirvana awaits you at the Red Coat, which also won the 2011 Best of Metromix crown. You can’t lose with the Original Red Coat Special — a memorably juicy ground beef patty with shredded iceberg lettuce, sliced tomato, onion, special sauce and maybe some sharp American cheese on a sesame bun.
