Most of us know the Asian culture is wrought with traditions and customs, but have you ever felt perplexed as to what to do when eating sushi? Follow these basic do’s and don’ts and look like a pro.  Be careful with those chopsticks!

Always use the opposite end of your chopsticks (than what you put in your mouth) when taking sushi off of a communal plate.

Never spear a piece of sushi with your chopsticks, and never rest your sticks directly on the table or rub them together.

You should also never pass sushi between people while using chopsticks.  (psst… it’s alright to use your fingers to eat nigiri sushi if you don’t know how to use chopsticks.)

Now let’s eat! When eating nigiri, do dip your sushi in the soy sauce fish side down; the rice will soak up too much sauce and masks the flavor.

Do not fill the sauce dish to the top; the soy sauce will splash and it’s considered wasteful – add it as you need it.

Do not put the pickled ginger directly onto your sushi - it’s meant as a palate cleanser between various types of sushi.

Always eat sushi in one bite.
