Who says a great sandwich needs layers and layers of meat?
The biggest surprise in our search for metro Detroit's best sandwiches was the number of meatless nominations readers sent.
Three of them -- the Grilled Vegetable at Russell Street Cafe, the Dublin Garden at Eph's Downtown and the Mediterranean Tofu at Sprout House -- made our list.
But with all the interest in vegetarian options, we hated to leave out some of the other delicious meatless sandwiches we tasted.
Vegetarian Roulade Pronto!, Royal Oak. With 11 vegetarian sandwiches on the menu, Pronto! has much to offer non-carnivores, including the tasty Vegetarian Roulade, No. 14 -- hummus, avocado, tomato, red onion, lettuce and sunflower seeds for crunch, in a whole wheat lavash. $6.25. (608 S. Washington, 248-544-7900).
Steve's Veggie Sandwich No. 15 Steve's Deli, Bloomfield Township. With tomato, red onion, cukes, coleslaw, Muenster and American cheeses and Russian dressing on grilled rye, it's more than a meal. $8. (6646 Telegraph, 248-932-0800).
