Bar food is often all too common – throwing a patty on the grill, microwaving some nachos or deep frying some frozen chicken strips seems to be the norm at the standard bar and grille (with or without the ‘e’). Well, Philip Martinez is changing that mentality at the Northville Sports Den.
Opened since October of 2008, the Northville Sports Den is a family-oriented sports bar complete with 22 large LCD HD TVs, an inside and outside section (weather permitting), live entertainment on Saturday nights and a complex and thorough dining menu.
Philip stresses that an emphasis on service, quality and price (that is owner controlled) is the foundations to their success at the Den.
In his case, success can be easily derived from the food the kitchen puts out. We suggest trying a bit of everything. Kind of in the mood for pizza and a bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwich? The Northville Sports Den puts them together in a 16 inch BLT Pizza – a handmade and tossed pizza dough, baked white with mozzarella cheese and bacon, and (after its cooked) topped with mayo, lettuce and tomato.
Pizza and burgers may be a standard bar and grille menu fare, but the Den kicks it up a couple notches with their selections of hand-cut steaks ranging from a 16 oz t-bone, to a 14 oz ribeye, to a 12 oz New York Strip, and an 8 oz Filet Mignon. Those preferring the seafood varieties may choose from the baked cod (8 oz of Pacific Cod placed over rice and served with lemon aioli, capers, artichokes and onions), the blackened/char-grilled salmon (8 oz served with a tangy lemon butter sauce), fish and chips (hand dipped in a Bass Beer batter), and the shrimp and chips. Ah, forgot to mention, this sports bar also puts out some great slabs of ribs – slow cooked and finished with Uncle John’s BBQ Sauce.
The daily specials are equally attractive. Don’t be surprised to see Kobe beef burgers show up every now and again. On Fridays, be prepared to be stuffed with an all you can eat fish fry. But for our pallets, it’s difficult to compare to the Monday meal deal – $10 gets your choice between a t-bone, rib eye, New York Strip, or ½ slab of ribs!
The Northville Sports Den is serving breakfast (omelet’s, griddle favorites, cereal, traditional favorites, "Egg-stras" and hash heaven) on weekends, between 9 a.m.-2 p.m.
There are plenty of drink specials to go around, as well as live entertainment and trivia games.
The Northville Sports Den is one sports bar that is far from common, and one we will be returning to.
