The thing about restaurants on the water is that the view is often better than the food. That's not the case at It's a Matter of Taste in Commerce Township. Here, the view and food are equally good - and that's saying a lot, as the restaurant's broad brick patio on Union Lake is one of the most appealing and relaxing outdoor dining spots in metro Detroit. The menu isn't easily categorized. American, Italian, Asian, Southwestern and even bistro influences coexist on the list. In some hands, so many disparate flavors and influences would be a disaster. Here, for the most part, they're a delight. Crisped Walleye ($20) is a case in point. Several pieces of the fish, lightly coated and deep-fried, and a quartet of steamed mussels are served in a wide, shallow bowl over delicate jasmine rice and Asian-accented julienned vegetables, covered with a wonderfully complex and spicy red curry-and-coconut milk broth. For fans of spicy Asian flavors, it's the dish not to miss. The menu offers a wide selection of appetizers, many suitable for sharing, and there is live music upstairs Wednesday nights. Whether you're able to snag a coveted patio table or dine inside the attractive open-air dining room, It's a Matter of Taste is worth seeking out. --Sylvia Rector
