Mary J. Blige and Dwele at Chene Park
Soul. That's the first word that comes to our mind when thinking about the performances Wednesday night at Chene Park. Detroit's own Dwele opened the show, but it was undoubtedly the energy that Grammy Award winning "Queen of Hip-Hop Soul" MJB brought to the stage that had Detroit on their feet for the entire hour-and-a-half long set.
The hits aren't coming quite as often or charting quite as high these days for Mary J. Blige. (Her last big one on Billboard's Hot 100 was "Be Without You" back in 2005.) But it's far too early to rule the R&B powerhouse and nine-time Grammy winner out of the entertainment game. Her latest album, "Stronger with Each Tear," made a splashy chart debut back in December, and there's a movie in the works in which she'll play hip '60s singer-songwriter Nina Simone. It's tentatively set for release in 2012.
