Talib Kweli and Royce Da 5’9” were the two biggest stars to perform at Saturday’s second annual Dilla Day Detroit tribute concert where fans, friends and family gathered to celebrate the Detroit hip-hop pioneer's musical legacy.
The Slum Village co-founder (real name: James Dewitt Yancey), known in rap circles as Jay Dee or J Dilla, died at age 32 in 2006 of complications stemming from lupus.
Dilla Day Detroit featured virtually non-stop DJs, hip-hop artists and live music until Talib Kweli closed his set just after 2 a.m. But it was two Motor City matriarchs – Maureen (Ma Dukes) Yancey and Pepper Holton -- who stole the hip-hop show.
