Isaac Hayes through the years

With his buttery smooth baritone and bald head, Hayes emerged in the late '60s and early '70s as one of soul music's most recognizable figures. But he actually began his career behind the scenes, writing songs for Memphis-based label Stax Records like "Soul Man" and "Hold On I'm Comin'," both popularized by Sam and Dave.
