Erykah Badu & the Roots
May 4, 2008
Sunday night was something very special. Quite simply: It was a hip-hop/soul lovers' dream evening with the legendary Roots crew from Illadel dropping in to promote their 10th album, "Rising Down" while Ms. Erykah Badu took the starring role singing about two-dozen gems spanning her career, which began with 1997's "Baduizm." It's been four years and one daughter later since a studio release from the mesmerizing artist, but "New Amerykah Part One: 4th World War" was well worth the wait. And she killed it.
But the night wasn't based solely on the amazing live music being played inside the Fox Theatre. Over at Confidential, the Roots and friends all came through to support their leader, drummer ?uestlove, who was slated for a four-hour DJ set with the band's front-man Black Thought hosting on the mic. But, a sonic surprise was about to be revealed: ?uesto announced to the audience that this was a first in The Roots' 20-year history --- Black was spitting in the booth while ?uesto dialed up classic and new Roots cuts.
Great crowd. Incredible music. Epic indeed.
