Common, N*E*R*D and Santogold
September 28, 2008
It was live in the Dirty District as September came to a cool close. Saturday night the party was started at St. Andrew's Hall where DJ A-Trak dropped the beats before Santogold wowed the crowd with her global-dance attack. Post-show action headed down into the basement for a superfly DJ Frankie Banks dance party. Sunday night -- wow. N*E*R*D took the Fillmore Detroit stage where Pharrell (Williams) and co. gave so much energy during their set it didn't seem possible anything or anyone could top it. But Common's hip-hop rhythmic soul reached all new heights in Dilla's hometown, and when he closed it out during the 10-minute long freestyle over SV's "Thelonious" die-hard hip-hop heads lost it (at least this one did). If still standing (me, barely), DJ Dummy (Common's DJ) lit up Plan B to close out the weekend. Amazing.
