Detroit Rock City, baby. Fans in Michigan take our shows very seriously: And there's no denying it, we have a ton of award-winning venues that host legendary acts all the time. Sadly, we only have room for five music venues. After careful contemplation it was determined to break it down with some of the most notorious places inside and outside of the D to listen to live music. Hamtramck, MI 48212Small’s bar in Hamtramck — known for its changing lineup of live rock, punk and metal bands — just barely edged out 2011 champ the Magic Bag in this category of supreme sounds. Small’s gothic touches, including stained-glass windows and chandeliers dangling from high ceilings, make this place the high church of hard rock. But the regular schedule of live music and excellent band room made it the winner.

Bathed in the fluid sounds of some of the area's best jazz acts, Cliff Bell's of Detroit is a portrait of relaxed class, inside and out. Jazz lovers can sit at cozy, intimate tables lit by flickering candlelight and sip drinks while listening to live jazz performances almost daily.
Blind Pig

Ann Arbor, MI 48104Named after a slang term for police officers that had been bribed by speakeasy proprietors during the prohibition era of the 1920s, this college crowd hangout near the campus of the University of Michigan is known for its offering of live music and colorful crowd of concertgoers. Nirvana once played here, as did Jimi Hendrix and John Lennon, which speaks volumes of cool for this long-standing and eccentric nightclub.
