The Mega 80’s are Detroit’s
most successful cover band. Playing songs from across the fabulous decade they
are named from, the band sells out venues with apparent ease.
“I used to be in a
band called the M80, also playing 80’s covers, and we started in 1998,” says
singer Carey Denha. “We started up in Michigan State.
We play a retrospective of the ‘80s. We cover everything from British new wave
to the hair bands of the ‘80s. We even play some midwestern rock, like John
Cougar Mellencamp.”
With their impressive light show and a startling array of
outfits (remember those haircuts and all that luminous footwear?), The Mega
80’s make every effort to transport their audience back a couple of decades and
enjoy the best nostalgia trip in town. Frankie may have said “Relax” but The
Mega 80’s say “Dance, God-dammit.”
Going so far as to seek out the instruments that bands were
using in the ‘80s in order to get their sound exactly right, The Mega 80’s sell
out nearly everywhere they play and have proven that there’s still a market for
rehashed new-romantic anthems.
Former bank-manager Denha is glad to be able to say that The
Mega 80’s is now his full-time job. “I do not want to go back to that,” Denha
says. “I’m far happier playing ‘80s tunes for a living.”
