Sisters Lucas at Lager House

Identical twins Loretta and Julie Lucas have been singing together for as long as they can remember and now they have taken the next logical step and combined their exquisite talents in the form of a band.

The Sisters Lucas describes themselves as folky, psychedelic pop which as accurate as a description as we can think of. Their secret is the delicious harmonies that saturate every song, though their song writing is wonderfully catchy, too.

On Saturday, Dec. 27, the girls play a record release show at the Lager House for their new 7” single. It promises to be a very special night and Loretta says it’ll be rather fancy, too…

How did the two of you meet? I’m kidding. Sorry, I couldn’t resist…
Loretta:
Ha! We actually never met before. We’re identical twins that have never met.

How old were you when you started singing together?
L:
We’ve been singing since we were little kids. We were in Catholic School choirs, so we were choirgirls growing up.
Julie: We were typical rebellious Catholic girls in plaid skirts.

What music were you listening to back then?
L:
We really liked rock ‘n’ roll.
J: A lot of Jethro Tull and Black Sabbath.

How old were you when you started taking music more seriously?
J:
I was 26.
L: I had a solo thing going for a while. I played various instruments and we both played in various groups, but this new thing we’re doing is our most serious endeavor.

What is the biggest achievement of the band so far?
J:
Probably playing with Don Was.
L: We got to perform for the Concert of Colors with Don Was at the DSO.
J: We also recorded with him at 54 Sound. That was awesome.
L: He’s fantastic. He’s very positive and great to work with.

How would you describe your sound?
L:
I would describe it as quirky pop. I want to say psychedelic pop.
J: We’re a little strange.

Musically or generally?
L:
Generally, definitely.

Is there any rivalry between the two of you?
L:
Oh sure, we fight all the time.
J: I would say that, instead of being a rivalry, it’s a healthy competition. We feed off of each other. She comes up with ideas and it inspires me to come up with a part.

You have a new single coming out. Are you pleased with the way it came out?
L:
Yes, we’re very happy with it. Bellyache Records is putting it out, and they’re putting it out on vinyl which we’re very excited about.

Do you have anything special planned for the Lager House show?
L:
It’s going to be fancy and fantastic.

It’s going to be fancy, at the Lager House? I don’t think anyone has ever used the word ‘fancy’ in connection with the Lager House before.
L:
Just you wait. There’ll be glistening jewels and gold-plated silverware.

If you can make the Lager House fancy, that will be your biggest achievement to date.
L:
It’s been fixed up. I’m really excited that the restrooms are going to be reversed. The women’s is going to be the men’s and vice versa, I’m really excited about that.

If they don’t smell bad, then that will be fancy for the Lager House.
J:
We’ll burn some incense before you come in.

I’ll hold you to that. I appreciate it. What do you have planned for the new year?
L:
We’re going to do a full-length album and start touring. We’d like to go abroad so if somebody gives us the money we’ll do that.
J: My first plan for the next 12 months is to discover a bag of money. That’s a plan. In the movie “Fargo” they discover a bag of money, so it can happen.

They also put a man in a wood chipper, so let’s not follow “Fargo” too closely, shall we?
S&L:
Ha!
