Big question: Is there any chance this romantic comedy has a fraction of the charm of the first “Bridget Jones” outing?
Skip it: Although Kirshner brings a welcome unpredictability to her role, Graham has an unfortunate tendency to overplay the movie’s flimsy humor. Not that either one of them is helped by the ludicrous screenplay. The paper thin characters bear little to no resemblance to human beings and make decisions only a desperate screenwriter could dream up. Georgina’s overly elaborate plan involves advertising an apartment for rent, attending a funeral and potentially sleeping with her gay friend. You know, all the obvious ways to get pregnant.
Catch it: To hear this tip for sustaining a healthy romantic relationship: “You should never have put the words 'hate' and 'baby' in the same sentence.”
Bottom line: A tiresome comedy built entirely around aborted sexual encounters and mistakes, misunderstandings and misguided decisions. (Both onscreen and off: who thought casting Wisconsin-born Graham and Canadian Kirshner as the leads in a British comedy made sense?) It doesn’t take long to recognize this cloyingly cute comedy for what it really is: misconceived.
Bonus: Something that may not be apparent to American viewers: Since the film received funding through Northern Ireland Screen the majority of it was shot with Belfast standing in for London.
