Merciless cop Popeye Doyle (Gene Hackman) pursues a criminal by following directly underneath an elevated train in his car. This oldie-but-goodie ranks as a milestone achievement for its gritty realism—including an unplanned car collision that director William Friedkin caught on film and worked in to the final cut. The film’s producers later paid for the poor victim’s auto repairs.
