Funk in the Trunk at 5E Gallery
It's distinctively Detroit Tuesday nights at the Foundation at 5E Gallery. For about a year now the female-focused weekly promotion has showcased a unique blend of music and city spirit, from birthday parties featuring friends and fam always connected by our tight scene to big-time events like Ma Dukes and the (snowy) hip-hop J Dilla Foundation celebrating the late, great pioneer's birthday back in February.
On March 23, hip-hop sounds and Motor City street couture intersected once again at the inspired style-showcase coined Funk in the Trunk. “Most of the designers are debuting their collections,” Carter says. “The other designers… are showing new spring collections,” 5E PR Director Piper Carter told Metromix before the event.
Behind the (fashion) lines Tuesday -- that included everything from street gear to spandex to too-cool-for-school accessories were Classic Collections, Peace.Love.Spandex, DSE@Grand, Freshman Clothing, Hardcore Detroit, Monster Camp, Blackout Clothing, Bitchly Bizness, Ris Tena for GoldCrate Club and accessories by B-Flyy Creations.
And always a great spot to jam to the D's biggest and brightest, DJ Sicari, La Jedi and Mel Wonder hit the decks while Sheefy McFly, RenCen, Miz Korona, Street Justice and Danny (The Hybrid) Brown all took time to spit on the mic.
“We see the Foundation as a place where great talent is discovered, nurtured and supported,” Carter says. “DJ Sicari created 5E Gallery for the sole purpose of celebrating and preserving Detroit art and culture.” And tonight, Sicari will be honored for his committment to the city and his work promoting and bettering the community at the Detroit Young Professionals Vanguard Awards at Amnesia.
