Abandoned church party
Detroit transplant and filmmaker Nandan Rao, along with College for Creative studies grad Andrew Davis, rallied the troops to come out to to film some scenes for Rao's independent movie "Tender is the D." The script called for a massive party in their work space, the abandoned Woods Cathedral on the north-side of Detroit. About 75 kids stayed warm in the 20-degree weather by dancing into the wee hours of the morning. The filmmakers struck a deal with the church manager -- in exchange for the use of the space, they are cleaning and making minor repairs. The last service at Woods Cathedral was about five or six years ago, and after filming is finished, the neighborhood hopes to transform it into a community center.
