Fabulous fashion and “Sex and the City” go hand and hand.
Let’s face it, any fan of the show knows the four ladies -- Carrie Bradshaw,
Samantha Jones, Charlotte York and Miranda Hobbes -- paved the way for fashionistas
everywhere.
We all watched throughout the years for the laughs and
heartache, but what we really wanted to know was what the next creative combo
Carrie and the girls would be sporting in the big city. Who doesn’t like to
eat, drink and date -- what the show’s (and now the film) all about -- but shopping
and style, that’s what made “Sex and the City” a phenomenon.
“But, can you really
find fierce fashion in the Motor
City?”
Yes, you can and here’s how to do it the “Sex and the City”
way:
Stiletto Style
“Water, water everywhere and not a drop to drink” was a famous
quote from Carrie during one of her shoe-shopping escapades. Manolo Blahniks --
Carrie’s shoes of choice -- aren’t necessarily affordable for everyone (not
that Carrie could afford them either) so other trendy alternatives can be found
at Lorla’s in Northville.
Leopard print, metallics, patent leather and ornament
adorned shoes are all hot for the summer, according to owner Lauren Beras. Some
provocative options: the “all the-rage” snakeskin BCBG Girls heels for $99, the
Oh..DEER! sequin and metallic heels for $99 or the Luichiny black feather ornament
adorned heels for $89.
Hot Handbags
Designer purses (like the infamous Birkin Bag) were a “Sex
and the City” staple. The ladies
were never caught wondering the streets of New York without toting around the latest “it”
bag. But even us everyday women -- who happen to live in the real world -- like
just the right amount of “sex” once in a while, too.
Good thing we can find the seasonal picks, like colorful
capsule clutches, patent leather purses and animal print bags, says Beras of
Lorla’s. Also check out Tender in Birmingham and City
Style in Berkley
for more handbags that just so happen to go perfect with the cocktail you’re
holding in the other hand.
Coat Couture
Mix and match was just one fashion motto Ms. Bradshaw lived
by, so when it came to covering up, her and the ladies all had their own ways
to do it, whether it be a more tailored coat, to pretty patterns or something a
little more quirky. Jackets that are big right now -- and still will be coming
up -- are leopard print trench coats, such as one by Fashionista for $374 and
puff-sleeved cropped jackets, like one also by Fashionista for $330, according
to Dana Fowler, of Urban Blues in
Northville. Want more? Then try Posh Couture and Luxe Clothier both in downtown
Birmingham.
Exceptional Accessories
Bling, Bling and gold made girly also made its way into the
show credits, but only in the most stylish way of course. Accessories like nameplate
necklaces, fabric flowers, apple emblem necklaces, pearls pilled-on in layers and
hip headwear also added to the fantastical collection.
To jock the jewelry style, go to Lolly Ella in West
Bloomfield and, Flash Accessories and Oliver’s
Trendz in Birmingham.
Other hot add-ons: the five-finger hand glove, which can be scooped-up online
at Patricia Field’s (costume designer of the show) website or those crazy
Carrie-esk hats, which can be found at the Metro
Shop Downtown Fashion Emporium in Detroit, Lost and Found in Royal
Oak or Mother Fletcher’s
in Ferndale.
Party Perfect
The perfect party dress (or bar dress, or restaurant dress or
club dress) epitomizes the show. Whether it’s vintage chic, eclectic, modern or
classic, one place to look is Rococo in Northville where their stocked with
tunic length dresses, which seem to be number one now, says owner Trisha
Hurches.
Paired with leggings, skinny-jeans or alone, dresses like the
Glam tube dress for $65, a sheer silk tunic for $42 and a Wildcat sequin
mini-dress for $61 are flying off the shelves. Ariada and 110 Couture in Birmingham, along with Flair in Royal Oak also offer trendsetting styles.
