Although just the name alone of Adam & Eve may allude to some naughty, naughty thoughts, you can rest assured that this particular apparel and accessories store delivers wickedness -- except in the unexpected form of fashion forward ways for both men and women of metro Detroit.
“People think we’re a sex store from the name, but we’re trying to distinguish and differentiate ourselves from that because the name is actually something we came up with just to represent men and women,” says co-owner Natasha Robin, 24, of West Bloomfield.
Robin and her West Bloomfield partner Amanda Kalasho, 24, call themselves the recessionistas of the area for their boutique shopping spot, but minus the “boutique” pricing.
“You’re not going to break the bank,” says Robin. “Everybody loves to go to the boutique, but they don’t want to spend the boutique money so our version is moderately priced.”
So we hear you just celebrated one-year. How’d that go?
The party was great. We had Adam & Eve mixes for people, chocolate-covered apple wedges, cocktails, appetizers, DJ Captn20 and an after party at 7 Bar and Grill.
And how’s the year been?
It’s been great, too. It’s nice to see people travel to come see us because they’re starting to realize who we are. We’ve got a huge affiliation with the club scene because guys come in and want a shirt pressed and ready to go to wear to the club that night.
And for those who don’t know what Adam & Eve’s about….what’s selling now?
With women, there’s anything from sweats to bum around in to dresses, jackets and purses in lines like BB Dakota, Aryan K and BLANK denim. For men, we have Ben Sherman, English Laundry and 7 Diamonds, just to name a few. About 95% of the store is priced under $100 or less.
What do you think people love about your store?
People come in on Fridays knowing they’re going to find new niche items. Also, our incentive program: smart cards. For every $60 you spend, you collect a punch and then once you get five, you get a $30 gift card for the store.
Let’s talk Valentine’s Day coming up…any suggestions? What can we pick up for our lovers?
Dressing up in anything cute that’s red. You can definitely pick up something special for your significant other here. We’re also working on a “Hearts for Haiti” project where in the month of February customers can buy a heart and donate a portion of proceeds.
Beside’s that, what’s next for Adam & Eve?
We want to make Adam & Eve into a brand. We’re going to keep going within the next year to build new customers and, we’re hoping to open a store in another major city, but we can’t tell you where; that’s a surprise.
