Our fine nation has elected to the office of president almost as many different sorts of men as there are sorts of men available for electing. No matter their political or philosophical outlooks, however, many shared a particular, often overlooked, character trait. To wit: more than a few of our past poobahs were, by degrees both large and small, fans and aficionados of intoxicating spirits. And knowing his usual helps to paint a more detailed portrait of the man.
