Status: Holding down the hipster scene for over 13 years, this Ferndale institution wears its years of service proudly on its sleeve. One of the first establishments to set up shop in what was at the time an up-and-coming fashion and fun district, the Woodward Avenue Brewers is as ingrained in the scene as any bar can be.
The W.A.B (rhymes with stab) continues to maintain its eclectic character and integrity as a homegrown watering hole, all while growing and changing with the times.
Manager Chris Johnston attributes the W.A.B.’s continued success to the devoted employees and loyal patrons who make it such a warm and friendly place to spend your time and hard-earned money.
Gear: You won’t find a bulging bicep bouncer at the door or an official dress code for admittance at this carefree residence.
The crowd is as laid-back as can be and it shows. Jeans and t-shirts are par for the course, however just about anything goes. On any given night, the diverse crowd can be seen sporting styles ranging from form fitting frocks to Goodwill gear.
Mood: The open floor plan and welcoming atmosphere sets the scene for good friends and great times. Music flows freely from the well-stocked jukebox (known as one of the best in town) which is at the perfect pitch to promote conversations and sing-a-longs alike.
Pull up a chair at the liquor-lined bar rail, park it at one of the intimate tables for two or pile the crew into one of the large, wooden booths; whatever your pleasure, the W.A.B. is set up for to fulfill your needs.
During the warmer months, guests can take advantage of the outdoor seating area located along historic Woodward Avenue. Inside and out, the people watching possibilities are positively endless.
Pick me up: Not surprisingly, this local distillery has a selection of microbrews that would make any beer connoisseur blush. Depending on the night, you can enjoy anywhere from eight to 12 different styles including Raspberry Blonde lager, Hefe-Weizen wheat beer and Vanilla Porter.
Prices are very competitive coming in at about $6 a brew. Take some of your favorite selection on the go in a $12 growler and you can even bring it back in for a $10 refill.
The exceptional staffers are very knowledgeable and friendly enough to even split a pint in two for you and a friend. Now that's service!
Take a peek inside the license plate-covered menu and you will find an informational beer and drink list, along with a varied food menu featuring some very veggie friendly fare to boot.
Using as much local produce as possible, the W.A.B. serves up everything from traditional pub fare like burgers and fries to spicy Thai dishes. Prepare yourself to try something new, and chances are you won’t be disappointed.
Entertainment: They don’t need DJs or a dance floor; no weekly schedule of cover bands or glitzy theme nights. The assortment of trendy twenty-somethings and young professionals that make the W.A.B. their after-hours home make fun their own way.
You can get in a game of pool or squeeze into the photobooth and make some memories; no matter what you get into, this chill spot is a sure bet for an enjoyable low-key night out any day of the week.
