Status: A Detroit staple since it opened in 1997, the Well, just one block west of Greektown, has been hailed as a go-to spot to catch a game on TV, enjoy a cold one or just hang after work.

“We always try to keep that neighborhood vibe thing going,” says Bar Manager Ray Moses who came in with the new management in 2005. “We’ve done some minor changes to (the bar), and we’ve been going strong ever since.”

The full-scale bar and former retail space offers a wide variety of beer and is open throughout the week. The pace picks up on Friday and Saturday nights, and the best part? There’s never a cover charge.

Gear: Come as you are is the name of the game at the Well. There are no rules to abide by to enjoy this bar.

“I can wear my hat and untuck my shirt if I want to,” says Juan G. of Lincoln Park who enjoys the freedom of choice. “It’s a good atmosphere.”

Mood:  Perfect for those who like an old-school feel with a few modern touches, this bar features exposed brick walls adorned by signs dedicated to the many beers they serve. The vaulted exterior entrance and patio area are well-known traits of the Well, and the gold-lettered sign touting the bar's name is visible from the street. The walkway to the door is surrounded by natural wood decorated with classic signs.

Pick me up: Happy hour is in full effect on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays with $2 bottle and well drinks. Mixed drinks and martinis are also on the menu.

“We’re a healthy mix of booze and beer, but we also do specialty cocktails,” Moses says.

Entertainment: During the week, you can find any sports game on several flat screen TVs, and the 100-inch projection screen allows for the perfect viewing no matter where you’re seated.

For those who are more into participatory activities, there’s an X-Box available with games like Madden or Guitar Hero. There’s also a dart game, and on Friday and Saturday nights, the Well looks like a club with DJ Ray G and DJ Escalade on the 1s and 2s.

The Well will celebrate its four-year anniversary this Saturday.
