Status: Birmingham nightlife now has a little bit of everything rolled into one, thanks to this brand new bar that leads you straight to where glamour and game time meet.
Since swinging open their oversized glass doors in June, South Bar has put itself on the map of metro Detroit’s nightlife scene. Manager Gina Spadafore owes its success to the fact that they offer something very different than the rest of the bars in B-ham: It’s upscale and low key.
Spadafore says South offers “flat screen TV’s, a nightclub, fantastic food and the best patio in town,” making it a great spot to watch the winning team, enjoy a great meal and hit the dance floor with the D’s elite.
Using every inch of the large space to its full potential, South boasts a spacious outdoor dining and lounge area, room for private parties (perfect place for your next birthday or bachelor/bachelorette extravaganza), a separate dining room and a nightclub.
Mood: Statuesque white pillars mark the outside of the striking building located near the corner of S. Old Woodward and W. Maple. Glass walls, billowing white draperies and dark wood accompaniments make the interior inviting and attractive, chic and comfortable.
You can sit back, relax and dine on the outdoor patio or inside. Pull up a stool and throw back a few with the fellas at the main bar or step through the glass doors in the back and find a cozy spot in one of the semi-circular booths that surround the dance floor. Tall bar tables dot the night club area and make the perfect place to take what is sure to be a much needed break from breaking it down.
Gear: With so much to offer in the form of an entertaining evening out on the town, you can spot South patrons sporting everything from t-shirts and jeans to suit coats and slacks.
Thanks to the diversity of the separate areas and the crowd, you can feel at ease in casual chic attire or even your best little dress and favorite open-toed heels.
Pick me up: Taking their moniker one step further, South serves up a decadent menu featuring American favorites with a Southern and South of the Border twist.
Order appetizers like quesadillas or sweet and spicy fried plantains, dusted with cane sugar and chili powder served with papaya salsa ($6). Soups, salads and sandwiches include their specialty Shrimp Tortilla wraps filled with shredded Napa cabbage, cilantro sour cream and mango relish served with sweet potato fries ($10). Have your choice of entrée selections from Filet Mignon to crab cakes or pan seared salmon served with a tequila cream sauce and fresh coriander, South signature rice and a vegetable for $15. Save room for something sweet and order up a Lime Vanilla Crème Brule for a creamy, rich treat with some tart ($7).
What makes good booze even better? How about great Happy hour specials like $3 domestic drafts and bottles, $4 call drinks, $5 glasses of house wine and $6 martinis on Mondays thru Fridays from 2-7 p.m. Drank up quite a hunger? Get a tasty treat like Chorizo fondue and chips, nachos or a black and bleu burger for $7, BBQ pork sliders, buffalo rock shrimp or chicken wings for $8. Happy hour food specials also run on Saturdays from noon-5 p.m., all day on Sundays and on Mondays from 8 p.m.-close.
Don’t forget to get a taste of the featured martini like this month’s Carmel Appletini.
Entertainment: South is a great place to catch the game, do some serious people watching or just chat it up with friends. However the friendly and flirty staff are set to make sure the fun doesn’t stop there.
Check out live jazz music every Wednesday’s along with $5 glasses of wine. The nightclub is in full swing beginning at 9 p.m. every Thursday thru Saturday featuring a rotating list of some of your favorite names in the DJ game. Thursday’s offer select VIP parties from 9 p.m.-11 p.m.
