Status: Luna lovers rejoice. Fans of the funky retro dance club know that the lines at this hot spot can become extensive due its undeniable popularity. But owner Nick Cerulli has come up with a solution – create a new space for people to boogie the night away.
“On the weekends, there were lots of lines at Luna,” says Cerulli who has owned the Royal Oak club (then known as Groove Lounge) for the last 12 years. So he bought 9, a nightclub that catered to the gay community on the corner of Nine Mile and Woodward, stripped it down to the bare walls and opened Orchid, a 5,600 square-foot dance club.
Gear: While Orchid security sports basic black, the wait staff and bartenders spice things up with trendy outfits consisting of wide belts cinched at the waist, patterned tights, corsets and dresses. Most club goers erred on the side of simplicity opening week with jeans and casual tops.
Mood: Known for its alternative dance parties, Luna draws a crowd that can best be described as whimsical. Orchid, still in its infancy, hasn’t yet established a firm personality, but if the purple, silver and black walls and silver-curtained stage are any indication, there’s sure to be some eccentricities here as well.
Sha-Ron Worthen of Clawson has been going to Luna for the last two years. She heard about Orchid through an email and came to check it out opening week.
“I love the look – the weird stuff on the wall,” said 38-year-old Worthen who plans to spend her Fridays at Luna and Saturdays at Orchid. “At my age, I’m not into the downtown Royal Oak scene. It’s nice to have somewhere else to go. Luna is more alternative. I love that funky feel. (Orchid is) like a more modern Luna which is awesome.”
Like Luna, the dance floor takes center stage. A DJ booth flanks one side while the stage anchors the other. Two raised VIP platforms with tables and chairs are at opposite sides of the venue and mirrors along the wall reflect the colorful laser lights.
Pick me up: Drinks average about $5 and beers will run you about $3.75. There is no kitchen, but like Luna, there will be free pizza at last call.
Entertainment: DJs Paul and Bethany take on the decks on Fridays, and DJs Rikki and Mikki share entertainment duties with live bands on Saturdays.
About 16 flat-screen televisions tuned to music videos line the club like a technology wall border.
There is no cover before 10 p.m. on Fridays and $5 afterwards and on Saturdays.
