Status: Former NFL cornerback Chris Roberson opened his new club, Myst Ultra Lounge, in Southfield last month.
The 29-year-old Farmington Hills native spent four months renovating the 5,000-square-foot space, transforming it from the short-lived sports bar Groove Lounge, which opened in March.
Roberson, who played college ball at Eastern Michigan and appeared in NFL games with the Lions and Jacksonville Jaguars, said he originally intended to call the club Mynt Lounge, but the name was already taken. That led him to the sound-alike moniker Myst. He likes the club's location on Franklin Road near Pi Banquet Hall because it's near freeways and because "there are not many lounges in this area."
Gear: Myst is the sort of club where you dress to impress. Take your cue from Roberson, who showed up there recently dressed to the nines in a suit, tie and pocket square. Stylish jeans, dresses and club wear are acceptable, but people wearing athletic apparel and plain T-shirts will not be admitted, Roberson says.
Mood: A bar backlit with orange, green and purple lights gives the space a distinct club feel, while a dozen or so black, high-backed, LED-lit booths have been placed around the perimeter of Myst to create a lounge environment. Two polished silver poles beckon daring dancers to the center of the concrete dance floor.
In addition to its 240-person interior, a 1,500-square-foot patio offers clubbers fresh air and a respite from dancing. It holds couches and tables.
Pick me up: You'll find a full bar on one side of the club and a high-end liquor list at each of the booths. Though some events may be catered, Myst does not serve food.
Entertainment: There are nine flat-screen TV throughout the club, but Myst is the sort of place you go to to take advantage of the DJ and the dance floor. Themed nights include Indulge Wednesdays with a weekly guest DJ, Destination Fridays with DJ Forella and the sports-themed Encore on Sundays.
