Status: The Irish blood runs deep in the veins of the simple venue on 14 Mile Road in Madison Heights. Through name and ownership changes, the 3,000 square-foot building has maintained its Irish roots -- if only by name.
McLovin’s Irish Sports Bar opened in April, replacing the short-lived Naughty Irishman, which closed after about four months. The bar was McCool’s Sports Pub before it became the Naughty Irishman and was Shenanigans before that.
Owned by Dave Kamesky and Ken Fisher, McLovin’s is named after a character in the 2007 “Superbad” movie and has two levels – the main floor and the Red Zone Lounge in the lower level.
Gear: “There’s no dress code, but people do dress up for the club downstairs,” Kamesky says.
Mood: Though housed in the same building, the bar and the lounge generally attract different crowds Fisher says. Downstairs is home to the 21 and up crowd, while the pub is geared towards a slightly older set. Both spaces can hold about 400 people and there are 13 televisions on both floors.
“Our gimmick is where the pub meets the club,” says Fisher, who also goes by DJ K Nice and spins at the bar.
Steven Szablewski has been a patron of the Madison Heights bar for the last five years. He says despite the changes over the years, the wait staff has always remained friendly.
Pick me up: McLovin’s serves up traditional Irish dishes like Sheppard’s pie, but they also have steaks, spaghetti, Coney dogs and the McNasty burger with everything from bacon to coleslaw to corned beef piled onto a bun.
A half dozen or so booths are set up along the wall of the bar, and an equal number of high top tables fill the rest of the space. Each booth comes with a personal television and a sign with Irish sayings like “God created liquor to keep the Irish from conquering the world” and “May you be in heaven for two hours before the devil knows you’re dead.”
Drink specials are abundant and range from $2 Tuesdays from 9-11 p.m. to Double Power Hour on Wednesday with $1 drinks. Food specials are also available each day -- Mondays, you can get a large pizza and pitcher of beer for $9.95, Tuesday’s special is a New York strip dinner for $5.95, Wednesday are all-you-can-eat spaghetti for $5.95.
Entertainment: A small glossy wood dance floor is set up near the stone-front DJ booth on the main level, and a mirrored wall near the dance floor gives the illusion of more space.
Red Zone Lounge has a lounge-like seating area, its own bar and a decent-sized tile dance floor. The lower level is only open Friday and Saturdays and features DJs.
