Status: Opening up shop in Royal Oak just over a year ago, this sports bar extraordinaire has made a name for itself with the club-going crowd as the place to see and be seen almost every night of the week. While BlackFinn may be marketed as simply a restaurant and New York-style saloon, it is anything but your run of the mill eatery.
With new General Manager Chris Funaro at the helm, this “company that cares” promises to continue to “focus locally on giving back to the community” with its frequent fund-raising and economical after-work events.
Tall ceilings and open architecture make the space seem a bit larger than it actually is, and thanks to the droves of social butterflies that flutter about nightly, it’s not hard to feel somewhat swarmed at times.
An ideal place to grab a quick lunch that won’t bust your wallet wide open, Blackfinn also offers a happy hour virtually unrivaled by Royal Oak standards.
Mood: The extremely friendly staff and management make this casual chic establishment a great place to kick back and relax by day or hit the dance floor by night.
Summer months allow for the opportunity to fold open the large wooden glass-paneled doors up front and welcome in the crisp night air which flows through the entire venue keeping the atmosphere fresh and lending to a somewhat old-time appeal.
Nightfall brings about a bustling background that makes conversation more than just a little tricky. Then again, if you’re at BlackFinn after-dark conversation is probably not what you’re looking for.
Get there early enough and you can even snatch up a prime piece of real estate at one of the more private, rich mahogany booths that reside to the right of the main bar area. You can even enjoy a front row seat to the game thanks to your very own tableside flat screen.
Gear: Stepping out at BlackFinn is an affair to remember and those who come to party most definitely dress the part.
There is no official dress code for entry and almost anything goes. However, it could be said that bringing it in anything but your best would leave you in the back of the pack.
Pick me up: Dishing out an assortment of traditional American favorites like cheesesticks, spinach artichoke dip and fried calamari, BlackFinn mixes it up with some down home favorites best described as upscale with a southern twist. Everything from BBQ pulled pork sliders ($6.99) to beer battered fish and chips ($12.99) are offered.
Lunch specials vary day to day and include dishes like old-fashioned meatloaf with pan gravy, garlic mashed potatoes and roasted maple glazed carrots for just $6.99.
Happy hour, daily from 4-7 p.m., presents the perfect excuse to get an early start. Then again, who needs an excuse when prices include $2 domestic drafts, $3 import drafts and house wines, $4 call drinks and $5 martinis (down from the competitive full price of $7.50). Take a sip of fun flavors like Strawberry Cheesecake, Choca-lota-tini or Expresso.
Entertainment: 30 large flat-screen TVs dot the venue’s interior and make BlackFinn one of the best spots in Royal Oak to take in some serious sports watching.
However, after the last play is called, a different kind of game begins.
Check out the scene at Totally Awesome ‘80s Service Industry Night every Tuesday. With proof of employment in a restaurant, bar, retail, salon or spa, you can take advantage of $3 you-call-its from 10 p.m. until close. Weekly contest winners are awarded for best-dressed ‘80s wear and best ‘80s dancer.
Enjoy great local live music every Wednesday night starting at 10 p.m. along with drink specials including $2 drafts, $3 call drinks, and $4 bombs from 7 p.m. to close.
On Fridays and Saturdays, the elevated DJ booth above the dance floor houses some of the areas finest DJs. With such a large crowd to please, the music is mostly mainstream and is best described as toe-tapping, hip-shaking top 40 favorites.
