New club gets elegant facelift

Menjo’s, a gay club in Highland Park a few blocks west of Woodward in Palmer Woods, was replaced this summer by Club 928, a nightspot that now caters to a more mature and urban crowd. Gone are the posters with bold sexual innuendos and male servers in hot pants. The dropped ceilings and hanging mini disco balls that gave Menjo’s an effervescent discotheque feel have been replaced with ebony-colored wood beams and a trendy silver color scheme.

The zebra-wood floors remain, but the lounge area has been upgraded with plush black leather couches, chairs covered in zebra-print fabric and a metallic tile border above mirrors that reflect laser lights in blues, greens and red. The pool table is gone, draped fabric hangs from the ceiling and the exposed brick walls have been painted silver. The patio parallels the elegance of the interior with a waterfall, wicker patio furniture and more mirrors.

The highlight of the club, which is dived into four spaces (the bar area, lounge, dance area and patio), is the large bar with a padded silver face lined with blue lights and a dark granite top. A raised DJ booth looks out over a large wooden dance floor surrounded by multiple seating areas.

Tune-Up Man from Kiss-FM (105.9) hosts the party every Friday night as Wax-Tax-N-Dre broadcasts old school music live from the club. WGPR-FM (Hot 107.5 Detroit) is in the house Sundays. The club is 18-and-up on Thursday, which is college night.
