It was 25 years ago this month that someone with vision decided that "Courtesy Bar" was just too lame a name for a Royal Oak location that had gallons and gallons of untapped potential.
Thus was born (reborn?) Gusoline Alley -- a glorious libation station that has defied (and continues to defy) every marketing and demographic assumption in the book.
In a world of steroid-poisoned sports bars, faux-Irish "pubs" and local meat markets where the cuts are about as choice as they are in a tin of Spam, Gusoline Alley sailed serenely and confidently into the future with nary a concern for trends, fads, or forecasts. From 1984 to 2009 -- a nice, wet quarter of a century!
Which brings us to the present day and an on-going celebration. For the rest of this month you can drop by Gus' and enjoy any number of things. What things, you ask?
Train Whistle Specials ... fifty cents off any drink marked on a "wheel of chance" ... $3 pint nights ... merch to make you the envy of your socially inept friends ( mugs, shirts, patches, buttons galore) ... music provided by Skin & Bones on Sunday, June 28 ... and a chance to contribute to Haven of Oakland County, a social service devoted to preventing domestic abuse.
So pencil in some time soon. They still don't take plastic. And you know -- that makes sense!
