Exchange Bureau Music Label Launch Party
Syncopated beats, rich thick bass and plenty of soul will help band-turned-music-label Exchange Bureau celebrate the launch of its new venture this Thursday at the Shelter.
“After we played in Miami last March, we decided to focus our efforts on the label,” says DJ and percussionist Joshua Adams. “We took a hiatus from performing live and began putting out remixes, finding artists. We’re trying to encompass all dance music – funk, hip-hop, house and trip-hop.”
Doing double duty as DJs and agents under the Exchange Bureau collective are Daz-I-Kue, John Arnold, Ibex, E. Spleece and Adams, all of whom will perform at Thursday's coming out party. Hosted by Paul Randolph with Jared Sykes on percussions, the funk-driven label will feature music with Detroit connections and character.
“We’re not really getting into rock yet,” Adams says. “We’re not being discriminatory on any type of music, but at this time we’re just kind of sticking with more of the electronic and dance aspect of it.”
From Arnold’s house and broken beat to Ibex’s minimal techno and E. Spleece’s spoken beat, the eclectic party is sure to stimulate both house heads and hip-hop soldiers alike.
Thurs. 9 p.m. The Shelter, 431 E. Congress, Detroit. 313.961.6923. $5. 18+.
Exotica Expo 4
Salt-n-Pepa were talking about it in the early ‘90s. Sarah Jessica Parker made a career of it for six seasons, and now Chaos founder Ally Stapleton and Vena are gearing up to showcase their knowledge about a little thing called sex.
“When we started Exotica we wanted to make sure that we had an event that celebrated all the aspects of sex -- fetishes, eroticism, sexuality -- everything you could think of,” Stapleton says. “Now that we are on our fourth Exotica, I think our purpose is to celebrate the decadence of sexuality.”
The three-day, deliciously playful event will take place at Clutch Cargo’s in Pontiac and will feature an exotica daytime expo. A group fashion show with the unveiling of designer Frenchy LaRue’s Latex Couture line will be held on Friday.
“Her stuff is amazing,” says Stapleton of LaRue. “I am pleased that she would choose Michigan to launch her new line of brilliant latex fashion.”
Chaos Productions, Noir Halo, Diet Goedde, Angela Ryan, Vena, Mistress Persephone, Stitch from Mushroomhead, Curse Mackey (My Life With The Thrill Kill Cult), Perry Gallagher, Aradia Ardor and Xris SMack and more will also perform.
Tim Woodward, publisher of the European bondage magazine Skin Two, will host.
“I think we are showing the world that you no longer have to hide your sexuality or anything that has to do with it,” Stapleton says. “Exotica is a celebration of eroticism, it doesn’t have to be dirty or hidden. It can be classy, decadent. It’s a great opportunity to experiment and experience life to its fullest. If you go through life living the way you think everyone else expects you to, are you really living?”
7 p.m.-2 a.m. Fri.-Sun., Clutch Cargo’s, 65 E. Huron St., Pontiac, 248.333.2362. $5-7 one-day pass, Fri. night $10, Sat. night $20, full weekend pass $35.
'Hills' star at Plan B
You may know him for his stint as Lauren “LC” Conrad’s boy toy on season 4 of “The Hills” or maybe from his short-lived minor league baseball career with the Baltimore Orioles. This Saturday, 23-year-old Doug Reinhardt will be known as the celebrity guest at Plan B Nightclub.
“It will pretty much be like a mingle night,” says Promoter Neiman Williams. “Of course, like any other celebrity, he will have a VIP area. He will talk as well on [the] microphone.”
Reinhardt, who is rumored to have dated Stephanie Pratt (Spencer Pratt’s little sis), is also the brother of Casey Reinhardt (season 2 of the MTV reality show “Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County”).
"We went with Doug because we felt the cultural phenomenon the show has become will turn this night into a great event," says Promoter Jasmin Medar of Monochrome Entertainment.
10 p.m.-2 a.m. Saturday, Plan B Nightclub, 205 W. Congress, Detroit, 313.226.1200. $15
