Punk, Paint and Panties
I am woman…watch me paint?
This Thanksgiving Eve, women will unite at the Belmont to celebrate art, music and the joys of being women at Punk, Paint, and Panties.
“The thing about Detroit is there’s not a lot of women getting together and creating their own thing,” says event organizer Beth Amber. “We want to make sure that women’s voices could be heard in all aspects.”
Beth Amber, who co-owns the traveling flea market Rock ‘N’ Rummage with Casey Schwochow, will showcase some of her work along with artists Turabelle, Wykina Blue, Lauren Bradford, Laura Kemp, and Jessica Price.
Artist will have items for sale Wednesday night, and the exhibit will run at the Belmont through the end of December.
Live musical guests for the event include hard-hitting rock band Broke and all female punk band Toxic Shock Syndrome. The night also features a burlesque performance by Sprockethole and tunes spun all night by DJ TZP.
Competing with all the Thanksgiving parties going on Wednesday will be a little tough, but Beth Amber says “a free (no cover) night encourages people to come.”
Free appetizers will also be served.

The Big Bang Dance Competition
Dancers from Chicago, Cleveland and St. Louis will converge in Detroit this weekend for the first Big Bang Dance Competition at Bert’s Warehouse Theatre.
“There’s a lot of different dance styles in the Midwest,” says Marlo Chatman of promotions company Independence Day who helped organize the event. “This will bring together all different cities and dance styles.”
A jitting (a dance style made popular in Detroit) contest will take place and Detroit hip-hop dance group Maximum Energy will perform. Eight dance groups will compete in the 17 and under division, and 12 groups will compete in the 18 and over division, Chatman says. Wayne State, Oakland and Grand Valley universities’ dance teams will also compete.
The winners will receive more than $1,000 in cash, a Big Bang trophy and be featured in the Midwest Big Bang Documentary currently being filmed.
The event, which was held monthly at various Chicago locations, will become an annual event that will be held in different Midwest cities each year, Chatman says.
FM 98 WJLB’s People’s Choice 2008 winner hip hop artist Dollah Jones will perform his single “Bang It,” and Detroit hip hop duo Roc Stea’D will perform.
“Our sound is something we like to call 'hip pop,'” says Roc Stea’D. “Its universal. All ages can relate. That’s one of the cool things about our sound -- its very diverse.”
R&B songstress Katrina Carson, who has opened shows for Al Hudson and One Way, the Contours, the O’Jays and performed on with the Whispers and Howard Hewitt, will also perform.
3 p.m.-7 p.m. Friday, Bert's Theatre, 2739 Russell Historic E.M.D, Detroit, 313.393.3233. $15 students, $20 general admission and $40 VIP.
Hellbound
Get your latex, vinyl and leather ready for the 69th (insert racy joke here) Noir Leather Hellbound event at Club Sin and Blondies.
“The party will be something special,” says fetish fashion boutique owner Keith Howarth., who began the sultry parties in the early ’90s. “There will be a Noir Fetish show, two DJs and two bands will play on the second floor.”
To commemorate the 69th event, local artist John Aretakis has built a seven-foot tall, 10-foot wide neon 69 sign.
Hellbound parties are a safe haven for people to wear their fetish clothing and not be “mauled by bar crowds,” says Howarth, who came up with the concept after visiting fetish attire parties in London.
“There were so many requests here at Noir in Royal Oak in the early ‘90s about creating this type of fetish attire party for Detroit.”
This Friday, DJs Dethlab and F.I.S.T. will work the mic, while two video screens showcase Los Minstels Del Diablo. Cybertrybe will add to the mix with a laser light show.
Along with the music, dancing and free food, there will be a human boardwalk where women walk across the chests of a line of men laying side to side on their backs.
Advance tickets are available at Noir Leather (124 W. 4th St., Royal Oak).
“One never knows what a Hellbound will bring,” Howarth says. “The euphoria a Hellbound creates is like a combination of a really sexy New Year’s and Halloween Party combined.”
9 p.m. Friday, Blondies and Club Sin, 2281 W. Fort St., 313.964.1000. 18+. Advance tickets are $8 women, $18.50 couples, $16.50 men, $10 transgender. Tickets will be $2 to $3.50 more at the door.
Feu et Glace
When it comes to throwing spectacular bashes, you’d expect nothing less than the best from the founder of one of Detroit’s most well-known and succesful nightlife promotions companies.
Celebrating his 30th birthday, Jody Haddad, founder of Vital Productions, will transform the MGM’s Ignite and V into a fire and ice playground for his annual birthday party with beats by DJs Mike Anthony, Tom T, Matt A, Prevu (who is also celebrating a birthday), Tom Keeling and Blake George.
Last year’s party, held at Eden, brought out close to 1,000 people, Haddad says.
A former bartender, Haddad earned a marketing and business management degree from Oakland University in 2001. Two years later, he created Vital Productions which has been responsible for promotions like Shanghai Wednesdays at Mon Jin Lau, Thursdays at the Bosco and Sexy Friday at the Corner.
9 p.m. Saturday, Ignite and V in the MGM Grand, 1777 Third St., Detroit, 877.888.2121.
