Big Boy’s Back
After moving to New York City in March, Big Boy’s headed back to the Emerald Theatre where he'll start a new monthly residency.

“I’ll be coming back once or twice a month for appearances and stuff,” says Big Boy, who took off to work at WXRK (92.3 NOW) in the Big Apple. The shock jock worked at Clear Channel’s WKQI-FM (Channel 95.5) as an on-air personality for three years, but “I left Clear Channel for an opportunity at CBS here in New York.

“When CBS decided to open a top 40 station in Detroit, they presented me with the opportunity to get back on the airwaves and kind of bring back what I was doing for Clear Channel.”

Along with appearances at the Emerald, metro Detroiters will hear some of Big Boy’s familiar antics via satellite as he takes to the airwaves weeknights from 11 p.m. to 3 a.m. on Detroit’s new 98.7 AMP (formerly Smooth Jazz).

Big Boy says people can expect broadcast mayhem similar to those from his Channel 95.5 days where he created the song “Doosh Bags” with Brillance and gave his interns names like Intern MILF and Intern Gay Guy. Big Boy's focus, at least for the beginning, is connecting metro Detroit listeners to the new AMP format.

“AMP is a new radio station and we need to establish the musical brand,” Big Boy says.

Between working his 7-11 p.m. shift at 92.3 NOW in New York and his 11 p.m.-3 a.m. shift for 98.7 AMP, Big Boy says it’s “real flattering” to be asked to come back and host events at the Emerald.

“I really miss all the people and being on the air in Detroit and doing stuff in the clubs,” Big Boy says. “I had the best time there in Michigan.”

9:30 p.m. Saturday, the Emerald, 31 N. Walnut, Mt. Clemens, 586-913-1920.

'New Moon' release party
Fans of “New Moon” (or should I say Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner) will have a chance to grab “Twilight” gift bags this Saturday at V nightclub and win passes to see the highly anticipated film.

“Guests who come in before 11 p.m. will receive a chance to win tickets to the advanced screening – the location is not public knowledge,” says communication consultant Shawna Fleming. “The room will be dressed in a ‘New Moon’ theme.”

“New Moon,” for those who have been asleep for the last year, is the second movie in the “Twilight” saga (set for release Nov. 20) about the dramatic love story between a dreamy vampire (Pattinson) and a young mortal (Stewart).

There’s no cover for the “New Moon” party in the MGM Grand Detroit before 11 p.m. if you call 313-465-1650 and get on the guest list.

9 p.m. Saturday, V in the MGM Grand, 1777 Third, Detroit, 877-888-2121. $10 ladies. $20 men.

Dance Party/Benefit Show for Crohn's
Admit it. It always seems little more fun to party when you know it’s for a good cause.

Haven’t tried it yet? Well, here’s you chance. This Saturday at Small’s Bar, Meaghan DeGrave is hosting a benefit show with High Strung, Electric Fire Babies, Charlie Slick, Woodman and the School of Rock to raise awareness and money for Crohn’s disease, a painful, chronic bowel condition.

“I came to this thing out of the blue because I got a thing in the mail about a marathon (for Crohn’s),” says 30-year-old Meaghan DeGrave of Birmingham. “I really hate running, but my (35-year-old) boyfriend (Justin) has Crohn’s, a really lousy digestive disease. It just stinks. The run is taking place December 6 in Vegas and we had to raise a bunch of money to get there. One idea I had was to hold the benefit show.”

All the money raised at the Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas Half Marathon in December goes to the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation to help find a cure for the disease.

“It’s a really fun night with really great bands,” says DeGrave. “It’ll be a fantastic night with a whole lot of energy.”

A $10 donation is encouraged, but DeGrave, who launched meaghansrun.net to help raise money for cause, says every little bit helps. Her goal is to raise $10,000, and as of last Thursday, she had raised $2,471.

For more information about the run, visit www.meaghansrun.net or www.ccteamchallenge.org.

8 p.m. Saturday, Small’s Bar, 10339 Conant, Hamtramck, 313-873-1117. $10 suggested donation.

Moonlight Sneaker Swap
Spectacles will anchor a sneaker swap party this Saturday where sneaker heads can check out the latest gear from collectors around the city.

“A sneaker swap is essentially something where sneaker collectors come out and sell or trade rare or exclusive sneakers,” says Zana Smith, owner and buyer for Spectacles, a clothing store in Detroit’s Harmonie Park. “Sneakers can be released as quick strikes, meaning they were manufactured in a very limited quantity. Sneaker collectors often collect these.”

Inner City Skateboard will be on hand to sale skateboards, trucks and wheels, and Mahogani Music artist (and Slum Village specialist) DJ Dez Andres will spin and give away his new release “Andres II.” There is also an expected live performance from hip-hop artist Earlly Mac.

“Every year we have our annual Shop n Sip the second week in November,” says Smith, who expects between 150 to 200 people to attend the swap. “This year, we decided to upgrade to what is really pushing the market. Sneakers.”

The event is open to the public, but vendors participating in the sneaker swap must have a minimum of six pair of sneakers and $5 entry fee.

4:30-10 p.m. Saturday, Spectacles, 230 E. Grand River, Detroit, 313-963-6886. $5 for vendors.
