Casa Colibri Fundraiser
Natural disasters help bring attention to areas of the world that need help but it’s a party at the Corner Bar Thursday that’s drawing awareness for the non-profit humanitarian organization Casa Colibri.
“We believe this is a great event in Birmingham to support ones who can't afford medical assistance,” says promoter Charles Rush of Rushcommunique.
The fund-raiser, which will raise money to help bring medical help to people in Central America, will be hosted by Shelby Township family practitioner Dr. Monica Nafsou, Luz Ramirez and Mary Nafsou who will all be going to Central America for a week-long medical support mission.
Donations start at $5 and will all benefit Casa Colibri. Music will be provided by DJ Matt A, and Dragon Bleu Vodka drinks will be available.
8 p.m. Thursday, the Corner Bar, 100 Townsend, Birmingham, 248.594.6272. Donations start at $5.
Straight Shots
Debuting last week, Straight Shots happy hour at TV Bar offers penny pinchers a way to save a little money while enjoying a nightlife environment at a reduced price.
Buy-one-get-one drink specials from 6 to 9 p.m. are available each week in addition to customary bar offerings like multiple flat-screen TVs, sofa seating, a full bar and a kitchen that serves typical bar fare like chicken wings, sandwiches, burgers and fries.
“We chose to do a weekly happy hour because it gives young professionals an opportunity to socialize, enjoy cocktails and relax at an earlier time of the day instead of them attending a traditional 10 p.m.-2 a.m. event which could interfere with their work schedule the next morning,” says Cortez Starks, who hosts the new weekly event with Stephen Sawyers and Dominic Adams. “We chose TV because of the courteous staff, as well as the laid back atmosphere the venue provides.”
6-9 p.m. Thursday, TV Lounge, 2548 Grand River Ave., Detroit, 313.965.4789. Free.
Exposed 2010
Over the last three years, promoter George Stager has raised about $3,000 for Melanoma Research for the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute. On Friday he will attempt to bring in even more cash for the cause with Exposed 2010 at the Dirty Martini, an event geared toward people in the fashion and film industries.
“It is extremely important that others support the cause because in recent past, the percentage of people who develop melanoma has more than doubled in the past 30 years,” says Stager, a skin cancer survivor.
One in five Americans will develop skin cancer in the course of a lifetime, making it the most common form of cancer in the United States, according to skincancer.org.
“That is why I am so passionate about spreading the message,” Stager says.
A silent auction will be held Friday night with all the profits going to Karmanos. 2006 Oscar make-up artist Lisa Glickoff, owner of Astute Artistry in Livonia, will also host a special Pret-a-Porte fashion show. Appetizers will be available.

8 p.m. Friday, Dirty Martini, 42705 Grand River Ave., Novi, 877.347.8907. $20. $50 VIP.
The Bigger Picture
Wannabe cover girls take note. On Saturday, Jelly’s World and FMF Entertainment will host a model search for “King” and “Smooth” magazines at Bayz Bar & Grill.
“Models should bring a comp card, or at least three photos,” says Joe Dew, of FMF. They should also be prepared to have their photo taken Saturday at the Bigger Picture event.
The winner of the model search will win an all-expense paid photo shoot in New York with IEC Studios and have photos submitted to “King” and “Smooth” which Dew describes as publications “known for its beautiful ladies captured in sexy, yet classy photos.”
The event, which also serves as a release party for Detroit hip-hop artist Gene P’s (Eugene Perry) mixtape titled “American Dream,” will be hosted by is month’s “King” cover girl Rosa Acosta.
A free buffet will be available.
9 p.m. Saturday, Bayz Bar & Grill, 9933 Greenfield, Detroit, 313.835.2299. $20.
