Kid Capri
Having worked as the Def Comedy Jam DJ for several years, produced tracks for Quincy Jones and toured with Diddy, L.L. Cool J, Busta Rhym, Lil Kim, Jay Z, Mary J. Blige and others, hip hop DJ Kid Capri will show his New York flavor in the D this Friday at V nightclub in the MGM Grand.
“I’m beyond excited,” says DJ Surab Deb who will warm up the decks before Capri hits the stage. “He is an amazing DJ and I can’t wait to see him live.”
Capri, born David Anthony Love, says Friday’s party will be a "life changing party experience."
Whether or not anyone’s life will actually be changed remains to be seen, but Deb, who has been DJing for more than 10 years (mainly on the South Asian Scene), says not only is Capri “an amazing DJ,” you’ll also get to experience him as a hype man.
“He plays the best tracks, makes live remixes and hypes the crowd all at once. This takes clubbing to a whole new level in Detroit. The east coast style has a lot more cutting compared to the Midwest. I would say that I beat match more. If you don’t DJ, that means when I spin, the music is continuous from one song to another and the beats blend in where as Kid Capri will scratch and stop a record and then drop another song.”
Pre-sale tickets are available at neptix.com.
10 p.m. Friday, V in the MGM Grand Detroit, 1777 Third, Detroit, 877.888.2121. $25 presale; $35+ at the door.
Undertone
A new monthly hip hop night called the Undertone will be introduced at the Crofoot this Saturday.
Created by FreshtightDesigns.com, a graphic design and event promotion company out of Ann Arbor, Undertone’s focus is to “refocus our vision so that we can view all the elements of hip hop,” says FreshtightDesigns Director Tarun Gehani.
“Hip hop, to me, has always been about the culture itself - the strive, the struggle, standing up for what you believe in and showing it to the world. Nowadays, with the record industry redefining the word and thus the culture, it has been hard for the true hip hop artist to prevail. The market seems to focus solely on the man and the microphone and has forgotten that hip hop is so much more than that. We're trying to flip the scales so they weigh in favor of the artists... to represent ourselves, our culture and measure our own success.”
Undertone will feature DJs, MCs, graffiti writers, breakdancers and more the first Saturday of each month. Jaydun, Self Says, Leaf Erikson, Primeminister, Country Fresh and Prophet Ecks will provide performances for the inaugural event this Saturday. There will also be an appearance by b-boy crew Motorcity Rockerz, and J-Aura of Vertical Ambition will host the event in the Pike Room.
“Similar to the block parties in the Bronx in the 1970s, our aim is to bring people together to witness collaboration and innovation on a localized level,” Gehani says. “We have such a diverse group of artists here in Michigan, and it'll be nice to see that mix of backgrounds and skill sets come together in one room for one night each month.”

Bebe Fashion Show
Mention weight loss, man troubles or big, um, backsides, and one family may pop into your head – the Kardashians.
Another thing the famed reality stars are known for is their ardent fashion sense, so it only makes sense that the ladies of E’s “Keeping up with the Kardashians” would eventually come out with their own line of clothing, which Detroit will be introduced to Saturday at Flat 151.
“The Kardashian sisters collaborated with Bebe on a clothing line inspired by pieces from the girls' closets,” says Neveen Farah, manager of the Novi Bebe collection and host of Saturday’s event. “I would describe the collection as sexy, hot and trendy.”
Those words could also be used to describe Flat 151, which is increasingly becoming the go-to spot for fashionistas to show their goods. The loft-like space has played host to numerous fashion events like Unveiled and Industry since opening this year, and now the Kardashian line will be another feature in the venue’s cap.
The fashion show begins at 11 p.m., and a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the American Red Cross to help support emergency relief and recovery efforts, Farah says.
Make up will be provided by Josephine Bell and Sharla Mohney and hair by Antonino Salon & Spa. Music comes courtesy of DJ David B.
9 p.m. Saturday, Flat 151, 151 W. Congress, Detroit. $15.
Gone Gaga
Turn on the radio or open a tabloid, and it seems the whole world has gone gaga for Gaga.
This Saturday at the Whitney, local boutiques Adam & Eve Apparel, Royal Duchess and the Annex will transform the models of One Source Talent into the over-the-top, body-barring singing sensation Lady Gaga through their use of clothes and hair and makeup by Bianchi’s Salon of Royal Oak.
“We wanted to break the monotony and give Detroit's party scene a new experience,” says promoter Jasmin Medar. “What better way then models with Lady Gaga outfits at the historic Whitney Mansion.”
9 p.m. Saturday, the Whitney, 4421 Woodward Ave., Detroit, 313.832.5700. $10.
