A winter oasis and summertime delight, the greenhouses and botanical gardens of the nation's oldest conservatory were built on Belle Isle in 1904. Designed by noted architect Albert Kahn, the conservatory's glass dome stretches 85 feet into the sky. It's now home to one of the largest municipally-owned orchid collections in the United States, many donated by Ann Scripps Whitcomb. On a warm day, it's a serene place to walk hand-in-hand through the rose and perennial gardens or watch for frogs at the lily pond.
